NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng’s Cabinet Appointment Will Strengthen Workers’ Voice in National-Policymaking

~ NTUC Central Committee supports Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng’s Cabinet appointment ~

Following the 2025 Singapore General Election, Brother Ng Chee Meng made a request not to be appointed to the Cabinet. This allowed him to focus fully on his responsibilities to the residents of Jalan Kayu and to Singapore workers through the Labour Movement. As his fellow NTUC Central Committee members, we understood and accepted that decision.

Delivering on his commitment to Jalan Kayu residents and Singapore workers

Over the past year, Brother Chee Meng has remained true to his promise and commitment. He has devoted himself to serving the needs of his residents in Jalan Kayu as a Member of Parliament. Concurrently, he has continued to champion the interests of Singapore workers as NTUC Secretary-General, including:

1. launching the NTUC AI-Ready SG to equip workers with future-ready skills,
2. advancing Company Training Committees to support workforce and business transformation, including worker-centric approaches to AI adoption,
3. driving the formation of the Tripartite Jobs Council to strengthen support for worker transitions, and
4. advocating for better support for displaced workers, and practical assistance for lower-income workers and vulnerable families.

We are heartened that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has now invited Brother Chee Meng to join the Cabinet, and that he has accepted. We thank the Prime Minister for recognising Brother Chee Meng’s continued service, commitment and contributions to both residents and workers, and for entrusting him with this important responsibility as a Cabinet Minister.  

Strengthening workers’ voice in national policymaking

We firmly believe that Brother Chee Meng's return to Cabinet will strengthen the voice of workers in national policymaking at a time when Singapore is navigating significant economic transformation, technological disruption and workforce change.

We also welcome his new appointment as a recognition of the critical role that our Labour Movement plays in Singapore's governance and economic development. This appointment underscores the Government's commitment to tripartite partnerships and ensures that the perspectives, concerns and aspirations of our Singapore workers continue to be represented in the Cabinet.        

As a former Cabinet Minister and current NTUC Secretary-General, Brother Chee Meng brings both national policy experience and a deep understanding of workers' concerns gathered through his engagement with unions, workers, employers and tripartite partners. We are confident that he will continue to champion workers' interests while contributing to Singapore's broader progress and development.
